About five persons lost their lives after a church building collapsed in Enugu State late on Saturday night.
The affected building was the Cathedral of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Oduma, Aninri Local Government Area of
Enugu State.
Eye witnesses informed our correspondent that the priest of the said church, identified as Rev. Fr. Nonso Eze, was conducting rehearsals ahead of the Sunday Mass with some members when a section of the alter suddenly collapsed.
No fewer than five persons died instantly, while one worshiper sustained a serious ankle fracture.
It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 9pm on Saturday night, after a heavy downpour.
Some of the eye witnesses said the worshipers were in a prayer meeting when the incident occurred.
The spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, said the incident is being investigated.
“A full scale investigation has commenced into the alleged incident just as the dead bodies of the deceased persons have been deposited at Jideofor Hospital Mortuary Awgu for necessary action,” Amaraizu said.
