CRSG Commissions Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) Unit/Flag-Off of the Repair of VVF Clients

A new Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) unit has been commissioned by the Cross River State Government with the support of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the flag-off of the repair of obstetric fistula clients in General Hospital, Calabar.

The Deputy Governor, His Excellency Professor Ivara Ejemot Esu, while commissioning the Vesico-Vaginal Fistula Unit in General Hospital Calabar, said, the unit will complement the Vesico-Vaginal Fistula Center at the General Hospital, Ogoja that will provide improved and quality health services for the residents in the state. The Deputy Governor lauded the efforts of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the support in engaging the services of experts in the handling of Vesico-Vaginal Fistula clients in Cross River State.

In her address, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr (Mrs) Inyang Asibong, who was absent due to official assignment and was represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Health, Elder E. U. Omini, said the new Vesico Vaginal Fistula unit in General Hospital Calabar was part of the renewed efforts by His Excellency Senator Prof Benedict Ayade and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to address the reproductive health of women and girls suffering from VVF in Cross River State.

Dr Asibong said the State Government and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in ensuring that VVF unit remains functional sponsored nurses, doctors and social workers for training on Obstetric Fistula management at Ebonyi South East VVF Center.

The Medical Superintendent of the General Hospital Calabar, Dr Ayi Etim, who received the medical supplies and consumables from the head of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Cross River State, Dr Kenneth Ehouzou, on behalf of the General Hospital, Calabar said the take over of the unit by the state government will bring expansion of services for the treatment and rehabilitation of VVF patients thereby reducing congestion at General Hospital, Ogoja.

Before the handover of the medical supplies and consumables to the hospital, the head of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Cross River State, Dr Kenneth Ehouzou, said UNFPA is in the state to support the State Government to provide health to the people mostly vulnerable women. Dr Kenneth said United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) believes in a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every child birth is safe and every young person potential is fulfilled.

Government functionaries who  presented their good will messages during the commissioning of the Vesico-Vaginal Fistula unit were Cross River State Public Hospital Management board led by Dr Sylvester Ebaye, DG, Cross River State Primary Health Care Agency, Dr (Mrs) Betta Edu, Medical Director of National Obstetric Fistula Center, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, Prof Sunday Adeoye, Development partners, and among others.
