The second edition of the Honourable Peter Odey Football Competition is set to kick off this month in Ogoja LGA.

The first edition which held in 2016 comprised 16 teams constituted from secondary schools across Ogoja from students of age below eighteen. Nevertheless, in this year's edition the tournament has expanded to 30 teams to be constituted from across the 10 wards of the state constituency.

According to organisers of the event the 2017 edition will have at most three teams from each ward and will accommodate not just secondary students of the agrarian state constituency but youths as well.

In a phone interview with the Honourable Member, Mr Odey, last week he said that his motivation for organising this sport event is to fish out latent sporting talents in the state constituency. His words, 'The motivation for organising this year's edition of the football tournament is born out of my experience of last year's edition. I must confess that I was shocked by the quality of potentials I saw among youngsters of my constituency. The skill they exhibited in this area of sport was brow raising! So, I decided to embark on an expedition of fishing out this promising talents'. He observed that he intends to breed unity among the potential leaders of the constituency via sport.

The sport-loving Honourable Member further said this year he will be bringing in officials from the state professional football club, UNICEM Rovers Football Club, to observe and harvest talents during the course of the competition.

Today, 14 March ballot for match fixtures will be picked. The main football competition will commence a week from today according to the organisers.
