The I-don’t-care-Deputy Governor Esu and the COE, Akamkpa lopsided list of recruitment
Efio-Ita Nyok|14 June 2017
With Cross River Northern Senatorial District arrogantly hanging unto 45 of the 100 advertised positions and Obudu alone clinching on 13 of this 45 in the midst of 5 LGAs in the north leaving the central and southern senatorial districts to grapple with 55 and Calabar South denied any recruitment opportunity in the just concluded recruitment exercise in College of Education, Akamkpa goes to demonstrate the ignoble and flagrant quality of nepotism and cronyism the present administration has sunk Cross River into NegroidHaven can assert.
The Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Education, Akamkpa Dr Steve Adah, who is reportedly a cousin to the state governor seem to have an over-riding influence, irrespective of who inclusive of the Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ivara Ejemot Esu, over who gets what in state owned tertiary educational facility.
Out of the 100 advertised and finally recruited academic and administrative staff positions, northern senatorial district got 45 slots, central senatorial district clinched on 32 slots, while southern senatorial district grabbed 23. Again, among 40 academic staff recruited, northern senatorial district had 17 slots, central senatorial district held on to 12 as southern senatorial district grudgingly had 11; concerning the 60 administrative offices the north have North 28, Central 20 and South 12.
Popular social commentator, Joseph Odok Esq., Ph.D has described this trend as the ‘Obudunization of College of Education Akamkpa’. Hmmm!
This recruitment imbalance is alleged to be orchestrated by Dr. Stephen Adah the Governing Council Chairman in collusion with Dr. Patrick Obere Abiam the overdue Acting Provost and Chief Goddy Ettah the (dis) Honourable Commissioner for Education.
Real breakdown of final list is as follows:
1. Obanliku: 3 Academic Staff, 1 Admin Officer; Total -4
2. Bekwara: 2 Academic Staff no Admin Staff
3. Obudu : 7 Academic staff, 6 Admin Staff ( 2 Admin Officers,  1 Accountant, 1 Med Record Technician, 1 Med Lab Technician, 1 nanny)  Total – 13
4. Yala: 3 Academic staff, no Admin Staff
5. Ogoja : 2 Academic staff, 4 Admin Staff ( 1 Admin Staff, 1 Accountant,  2 Deputy Chief Security Officer, it is worth mention that the Chief Security Officer) Total – 6
6. Yakurr: 3 Academic Staff and 3 Admin Staff ( 1 Engineer to Deputise Head of Works and Services, 1 Pharmacist, 1 Computer Operator) Total 6
7. Boki: 6 Academic Staff and 2 Admin Staff ( 1 Admin staff and I Med Lab Technician) Total 8
8. Etung: 1 Academic Staff and 1 Computer Operator,  Total 2
9. Abi: 1 Academic Staff and 1 Computer Operator,  Total – 2
10. Ikom : 1 Academic Staff and no Admin Staff
11. Obubra: No Academic Staff and 1 Computer Operator
12. Bakassi : 1 Academic Staff and no Admin Staff
13. Akamkpa : 5 Academic Staff and no Admin Staff
14. Calabar Municipality : 1 Academic Staff and 1 Admin Stuff,  Total 2
15. Biase: 2 Academic Staff,  no Admin Staff, this shows the position of the Deputy Governor in the power game
16. Akpabuyo : 1 Academic Staff
17. Odukpani: 1 Academic staff
18. Calabar South : No Academic Staff, no Admin Staff,  Total – 0
Lopsided list from COE, Akamkpa (i-v)

According to Odok, the ‘chairman Governing Council is alleged to be the overlord and has his stooge in the Acting Provost.
‘… the Provost play the script of the Chairman Governing Council, the Chairman Governing Council  prefers to leave him in Acting capacity as a provost instead of conducting interview to make him a substantive provost.
‘According to unconfirmed reports, the Provost is allegedly said to have implicated himself in so many transaction to satisfy the large greed of the Chairman Governing Council. The Commissioner for Education is also allegedly fingered to be a beneficiary of the illegalities that is alleged to be the order of the day in College of Education Akamkpa’.
It has also come to my notice that the official mode of exchanging pleasantries in Cross River Civil Service beginning from the Governor’s Office to the least perceived place is —’Omuo’ (whatever it means I don’t care). However, immediately you invoke this Obudu tribal mantra, you easily fraternise with the powers that be and is a potential recipient of the blessings of these nepotist gods. Short of this, to hell with thee!
Information reaching me has it that the Deputy Governor Esu is a man who doesn’t care about any other person except himself. My sources have it that they are not surprised that he puts up this character because he has always been doing that. From his days as UNICAL Vice-Chancellor until now. I don’t know how true but, the COE incident seem to be establishing that perception about him. He reportedly doesn’t subscribe to recommendation of anybody, that hardwork pays. Could it explain why Biase from where he hails from had only 2 academic staff and no administrative staff? Or, could it rationalise why southern senatorial district could be bludgeoned to the margin among the three senatorial districts? In all honesty, when one considers that Calabar South had no one recruited as either academic or administrative staff, Professor Esu should be commended for his feat in Biase.
Posterity will judge better.
