Fundamentally, freedom of expression is akin to a democratic society. It is one of the basic tenets of democracy.
But, last week in Nigeria —Africa's most populous country, the media was awash with comments and counter-comments upon a press release by the Senior Special Assistant ( Media) to President Buhari on what he titled as 'Hate Speech'.
Ordinary, Nigerians wouldn't have reacted to it if it wasn't masterminded to pulverized the same poor Nigerians that took to the social media years back to ensured that the same APC rose to government. How ironical is it now, to incarcerate anyone that criticizes the ineptitude leadership of the government and funnily term such as 'hate speech'?
How soon, have the APC government forgotten that their horse trading was successful because of the several hate speeches meted on the former President Jonathan Ebele Goodluck? If Ex- President Jonathan could endured it while can't they?
Doesn't it occur to them that we're in a democratic society and not a tyrannical, totalitarian and authoritarian society? Don't they know that censoring press is repression, barbaric and archaic in a democratic society like Nigeria?
Why must one be incarcerated for freely expressing his/her opinion in a society s/he is entitled to as a legitimate citizen?
It's glaring that we're witnessing another form of tyranny in disguise of democracy.
I implore APC government to quickly apologize to Nigerians through a press release and expunge hate speech.
Let's stop the deception and let our people express their fundamental rights.
Good morning, Nigerians!
