High Chief (Prof.) Eyo Etim Nyong has presented himself as sacrificial lamb for the redemption of Cross River State as he, Saturday, officially declared to run for the Office of Executive Governor of the State under the aegis of the All Progressives Congress (APC) NegroidHaven can report authoritatively.
The reputable professor of Petroleum Geology made this known in Calabar, the state capital city on 1st September while addressing a mammoth crowd comprising political big wigs in the APC, various support groups, fans, indigenes and residents of the state, etc where he argued that governance, being rocky, had broken down in Cross River state.
According to him, his mission is to develop a system of governance in Cross River towards realising a vibrant and sustainable economy, through palpable indices of the prioritised needs of indigenous and resident Cross Riverians as a testament to democratic dividends.
Prof Nyong delineated what he referred to as ‘sectorial development plan of my administration’ where he highlighted, if given the mandate to lead the state, a special interest on security, wealth creation, women and youth empowerment, agriculture, education, health infrastructure, etc.
His words, ‘if the truth must be clearly stated and the future secured for the generations to come, you will agree that governance has been broken down, and indeed become completely rocky under the watch of the present hegemony, thus exposing Cross Riverians to unwarranted frustration, and quantum hardship…
‘Sequel to the above and with all humility, as well as your esteemed permission, I have no choice but to present myself as a sacrificial lamb for the redemption of our dear state, under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), as I aspire to become governor of our dear state, come 2019. Let me at this point, solicit your collective support for the exalted office of governor since that collectively we can reclaim our state from the adventurers and opportunists.’
Prof Nyong revealed that his sectorial development plan focuses on development projects that will add value to Cross River’s economy as well as ultimately target the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while keying into the National Development Policies and Programmes.
Concerning infrastructural development, Prof Nyong promised to embark on a detailed and aggressive programme of building infrastructures in order to improve the quality of life of the citizens and people of Cross River State. He made reference to generating satellite towns with adequate and necessary quality infrastructure to address decongestion of traffic in central areas as well as construction/rehabilitation of roads networks to link communities to markets and urban cities; he said he will empower CROSPIL to enhance housing development at sundry levels; he talked about alternative power supply through renewable energy sources, solar plants to power street lights, etc.
Agriculture wise, the APC guber aspirant observed that heavy or total dependence on monthly allocation was no more viable. While highlighting the global resort to agriculture, Prof Nyong argued that Cross River is the most geographically advantageous state. His words, ‘heavy or total dependence on monthly allocation can no longer be a viable option to drive development…
‘My administration shall institute robust agricultural programs to encourage farmers and large scale investors in Agriculture in areas such as provision of fertilizer to farmers at highly subsidised rates, provision of storage and processing facilities, creation of small farm management schemes and other value chains.
On education, Prof Nyong promised to, if given the mandate, ensure strict adherence to established rules in view of securing competitive standards through quality assurance control, affordability, accessibility, special education needs, staff motivational incentives, fee regulation, and uniformity in private schools, etc.
In health, the guber hopeful promised to make health care free for a special category including pregnant women, physically challenged, indigent persons, while there shall be interventions for senior citizens, elder-statesmen, etc.
Other focal areas for his anticipated administration, if given the mandate according to him shall be environment and waste management, tourism, women and youth development, security, empowerment of physically challenged and disabled persons, and information and communication.
Present at the occasion were Amb Joseph Ayambem the chair of the planning committee, APC state chairman, Dr Matthew Achigbe, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, Ernest Irek the DG of the Campaigns, etc.
