…Bakassi LGA Takes Stand Against Poor Sanitation

Bakassi –In a move to address worsening sanitation conditions, the 7th Bakassi Legislative Assembly on Tuesday debated a motion calling for immediate improvements to waste management and public hygiene infrastructure NEGROIDHAVEN can report.

Sponsored by Hon. Miriam Etim Okon, the motion highlighted the dire consequences of poor sanitation, including disease outbreaks, environmental degradation, and social stigma, particularly affecting vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.

“Open defecation and inadequate waste management are not just inconveniences—they are public health emergencies,” Hon. Okon declared during the session.

The motion outlined a four-point action plan, namely, public awareness campaigns which would leverage traditional town criers and digital platforms to educate residents; sanitation infrastructure development with aims to build waste management systems and toilets; stakeholder consultations with committees to engage communities and experts for solutions; and the council commitment which would formally adopt the motion to prioritize resident well-being.

The motion was seconded by Hon. Ene Edet, signaling LGA-wide support.

Bakassi, a coastal region, faces unique challenges like flooding and population displacement, exacerbating sanitation risks. Feelers have opined that if the motion is implemented, the proposals could set a precedent for other LGAs in Cross River state.

The motion has been referred to the Assembly’s committee on environment for further and robust engagement.
