The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Offiong Efanga Offiong, has called on the alumni of the varsity’s Demonstration Primary School (UDPS) to join hands with the institution to restore its former glory.

Prof. Offiong Offiong made this appeal when members of the UDPS Alumni paid him a courtesy visit at the Council Chambers.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, noting that the revival of the school cannot be achieved by the management alone.

He stressed that alumni, as key stakeholders, have a critical role to play not only in offering support but also in serving as ambassadors who promote the value and legacy of the school.

The university administrator further noted the need for stronger advocacy and awareness, especially within the surrounding community, to encourage parents to enroll their children in the school.

According to him, many parents in the surrounding community may not be fully aware of the school’s potential; therefore, there is a need for consistent sensitization efforts to encourage enrollment and rebuild public confidence.

He added that during his familiarization visits, he had already identified areas of concern within the school and had begun addressing some of them.

Prof. Offiong further assured the alumni that issues such as the school gate and access routes would be reviewed to ensure easier movement for both pupils and parents.

He emphasized that the security of the school would also be strengthened.

While commending the alumni for their commitment and contributions to the development of UDPS, he described their efforts as both encouraging and necessary.

He assured them that they would be fully involved in its plans, creating room for collaboration and allowing them to support the school in meaningful ways.

Earlier, the leader of the UDPS Alumni team, Affiong Henry, expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for granting them an audience and congratulated him on his emergence as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the university, noting that his leadership comes at a critical time when UDPS needs renewed attention.

Prof. Henry highlighted the contributions already made by the alumni and expressed their willingness and readiness to do even more for their alma mater.

She described UDPS as a foundational school that has shaped many successful individuals, making it important to preserve its standards for future generations.

Prof. Henry also revealed that the school will mark its 50th anniversary this year, describing the milestone as an opportunity not just for celebration but for reflection and renewal.

As part of the golden jubilee activities, the alumni plan to collaborate with the school to carry out a comprehensive general refurbishment project aimed at improving its infrastructure.

She assured the Vice Chancellor of the alumni’s continued partnership with the school board to ensure the institution operates effectively.
