NASS Mid-term: C’River Reps sponsor 1% of 1365 bills, Senators sponsors 3.6%

Cross River’s federal lawmakers at the 9th National Assembly have contributed 1% of the 1,365 bills sponsored at the House of Representatives and 3.6% of the total bills sponsored at the Senate NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.

According to a recent publication by OrderPaper, Sen. Gershom Henry Bassey (PDP, Cross River South) is the sponsor of the highest number of bills among the three senators from the state at midterm of the 9th Assembly.

He sponsored 19 bills constituting 54.29% of the bills sponsored by the three senators from the state, of which 10 were sponsored in his first legislative year. Relevant among his bills is the Sexual Offenders (Registration) Bill 2021 (SB. 711).

Sen. Stephen Adi Odey (PDP, Cross River North) and Sen. Sandy Ojang Onor (PDP, Cross River-Central) have sponsored 4 bills each, both constituting 11.43%. Each has 2 of the bills sponsored sponsored in the first year.

In terms of overall aggregate, the Senators from Cross River State have only contributed 3.6% of the total bills sponsored by the 109 Senators in the first half of the 9th Assembly. This however, does not include the 8 bills sponsored by Sen. Rose Oko, before she passed on in March 2020.

Meanwhile, at the House of Representatives, Mr. Ochiglegor Idagbo (PDP, Obanliku/Obudu/ Bekwara) has 7 bills to his credit, being the highest among his team and constituting 50% of bills sponsored. All these bills were sponsored in the first legislative year of the 9th Assembly.

Egbona Alex (APC, Yakurr/Abi) and Eta Mbora Edim (PDP, Calabar Municipal/Odukpani) have sponsored 2 and 3 bills constituting 14.29% and 21.43% respectively. All of these in the first year. Likewise Michael Etaba Irom (PDP, Obubra/Etung) and Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe (PDP, Ogoja/Yala) have sponsored 1 bill, constituting 7.14% each for the duo, which was sponsored in the first year.

However, Daniel Effiong Asuquo (PDP, Akamkpa/Biase), Essien Ekpeyong (PDP, Calabar South/Akpabuyo/Bakasi) and Christopher Ngoro Agibe (PDP, Ikom /Boki) are the only members from the state with no sponsored bill since assumption of duty at the 9th assembly.

The Cross-River State team has only contributed 1.0% of the 1365 bills sponsored at the House of Reps at midterm.

NEGROIDHAVEN could not ascertain as at press time, how many of these bills have been assented to by the president, Muhammadu Buhari.
