The University of Cross River State has introduced a monthly keep-fit programme for staff, an initiative some workers say reflects the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment to their welfare.

The inaugural exercise held on Friday, 30 October 2026, drew both academic and non-academic staff who took part in a walk and aerobic sessions.

Management said the programme was designed to promote physical well-being, improve staff health and boost productivity. It will now hold on the last Friday of every month.

Vice-Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, represented by the Dean of Engineering and Dean of Deans, Prof. Simon Ogbeche Odey, praised the turnout.

“This initiative is an important step towards building a healthier and more productive workforce,” Bassey said.

She added that the keep-fit exercise would hold on the last Friday of every month and noted that regular physical activity could help prevent certain ailments, including high blood pressure.

“Staff should undergo regular medical check-ups to detect and manage health conditions early, rather than waiting until they become critical,” the Vice-Chancellor urged.

Some staff who spoke after the exercise welcomed the programme.

“This reflects the Vice-Chancellor’s commitment to staff welfare. She recognises that a healthy workforce is essential to the effective delivery of the university’s mandate,” one of the workers said.

Another staff member added that the monthly sessions would help strengthen camaraderie among colleagues while improving overall productivity.

The Director of Sports, Dr. Joseph Ukpong, who led the activities, stressed the value of consistent exercise, adequate rest and healthy living. He said regular physical activity could reduce medical bills and enhance fitness, agility and output at work.

Ukpong advised staff to create time for short daily exercises, prioritise rest, maintain balanced diets and reduce salt intake, especially as they grow older.

The university expects the keep-fit programme to give staff a regular platform for physical activity, promote wellness and foster closer bonds within the campus community.
