DEVELOPING STORY: Petty Traders harassed, beaten to comma in Calabar

The year began on a very bad note with petty traders buying and selling farely used wares in Calabar the Cross River state capital city NEGROIDHAVEN can report authoritatively.

Mr Chinedu Igwe the Vice Chairman, VC of Petty Traders Association at Shopping Center Complex at Watt Market has been reportedly beaten to comma by thugs suspected to be acting at the instance of Calabar South Council Authority.

According to one of the traders ‘This is happening now in Shopping Center as the local government has decided to use area boys to eject petty traders, for matters that are already in court. The people you see in that video beating my vice chairman are councillors of Wards 2, 4, 10, 3, and 9’.

Mr Igwe the Vice Chairman, VC of Petty Traders Association at Shopping Center Complex at Watt Market has been hospitalised after going comatose.

Calabar South LG chairperson is alleged to have ordered hoodlums who are elected members of Calabar South Legislative Assembly to attack, harass, intimidate and beat up petty traders at and out of the complex Monday morning.

According to the chairperson of the said local government area, Mrs Esther Bassey, the local government authority is evacuating her tenants on the said property because their rent has expired.

Recall that the Calabar South Council Authority had last year issued a circular disclosing that it will evacuate the traders from the facility come 31st December 2022.

According to the traders, the rents of some of the petty traders are yet to expire when elected officials and thugs suspected to be acting at the instance of the local council authority stormed the complex facility and evacuated these traders this Monday morning using force.

Video footages allegedly feature Wards 2, 3, 4, 10, and 9 councillors from Calabar South Legislative Assembly both partaking themselves and supervising the harassment, intimidation, and beating up of Petty Traders selling at Shopping Center Complex, Watt Market, Calabar on Monday.
