A virtual campaign to celebrate long-standing marriages across the world has been on, on Cross River cyberspace NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.
Controversial journalist and activist, Agba Jalingo, on Tuesday initiated the campaign to celebrate some marriages which have lasted for decades without experiencing divorce.
While talking about the rationale for the campaign, Jalingo said ‘Let’s celebrate the longest surviving marriages in our communities and hoods, despite all odds. Let talk to them and get their pictures out and celebrate them. Name them here if you know any. The few celebrity divorcees and misandrists cannot control this narrative. They are the minority compared to those who are happy in their marriages.’
They have been married for 39 years and still sleeping on the same bed till date and happily married, Jalingo said .
Continuing the controversial journalist added, ‘People who are happy in their marriages are far more than the few loud ones who are not. Post ten divorces and we will post 1000 happy unions. When brothers fight, we don’t put the blame on their brotherhood. When friends fight we don’t put the blame in their friendship. When spouses scam themselves, don’t put the blame on marriage.’
They are still happily married despite all odds.
Thus far, the lead celebrant has highlighted the marriages of over 25 marriages which has lasted for at least 25 years. Some of those marriages have lasted for as long as 40 years.
Celebrating the Oceans, Jalingo said ‘BILLY OCEAN. He was 73 years yesterday. He has been married to one woman. JUDY BAYNE and for 44 years… They have been sleeping on the same bed. Concerning Odungbes, he said ‘Mr and Mrs Fidelis Odungbe, parents of Loveth Odungbe have been married for 54 years and sleeping on the same bed. They are still alive, married and happy in their marriage,’ ‘Mr and Mrs Joseph Abia, parents of Lucy Okrolor Alawa, have been married for 43 years and 8 months and sleeping on the same bed. They are still happily married despite all odds. Let’s celebrate them…’ he talked about the Alawas.
