…State Assembly without leadership 

The Speaker of the tenth (10th) Cross River State House of Assembly (CRSHA), Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, has been removed by seventeen legislators. A total of seventeen legislators signed a notice of removal NEGROIDHAVEN has confirmed.

The incident which happened on Wednesday at the legislative chamber in Calabar is premised on four grounds, namely, financial misconduct (three particulars), incompetence and wrong conduct of plenary (two particulars), non compliance with the Cross River State Legislature Funds Management Law 2021 (three particulars), and total failure to convene leadership meeting (one particular).

Hon. Effiong Ekarika who represents Calabar South 1 State Constituency and Hon. Charles Omang Omang of Bekwarra State Constituency moved the motion for the removal of Ayambem, citing section 92 (2C) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

After the mild drama at the legislative chamber immediately after Ayambem’s removal, the 17 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly, addressed a press conference at Metropolitan Hotel Calabar, where they further reaffirmed their removal notice of the Speaker, Ayambem.

As at press time, the Assembly has been without leadership as the seventeen are yet to elect a new speaker.

Meanwhile, the State Assembly hopes to elect a new Speaker on Thursday with Etung and Yakurr LGAs, likely to produce the next Speaker.

The Executive Governor of the state Bassey Otu has been under pressure to intervene.
