CALABAR — Political activities are gathering momentum in Cross River State as the All Progressives Congress in the Southern Senatorial District commences screening of aspirants ahead of forthcoming elections.

The exercise, organised by the Cross River South Senatorial District Leadership Forum, is scheduled to hold over two days at the Conference Room of the Local Government Service Commission, State Secretariat Complex, Calabar.

According to a notice issued by the forum’s Secretary, Dominic Aqua Edem, House of Assembly aspirants from the nine state constituencies in the district are expected to appear before the leadership on Tuesday, April 28, while National Assembly aspirants, including those vying for Senate and House of Representatives seats, will be screened on Wednesday, April 29.

The screening is slated to begin at 10 a.m. on both days.

Aspirants have been directed to present key documents, including copies of their party e-registration slips, educational certificates, voter’s cards, and file jackets, as part of efforts to verify their eligibility and credentials.

Party sources said the exercise forms part of internal processes aimed at strengthening candidate selection and ensuring compliance with party guidelines ahead of the primaries.

The development signals increasing political mobilisation within the ruling party as stakeholders position for elective offices, with analysts noting that such engagements are early indicators of heightened contestation in the build-up to the next election cycle.

Although the party has not publicly outlined further stages of the selection process, observers say the screening exercise could shape the field of aspirants and influence alignments within the party across the senatorial district.
