CALABAR – The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cross River State, Prof. Francisca Bassey, has expressed concern over the slow pace of the full resumption of academic activities in parts of the institution following the suspension of the Academic Staff Union of Universities strike.
Bassey stated this after inspecting lecture theatres, classroom blocks and other academic facilities across the university to assess compliance with the institution’s directive on the immediate resumption of teaching and learning.
The inspection tour took the Vice-Chancellor and members of the university management to various faculties and academic units, where they interacted with lecturers and students and monitored the progress of academic activities.
Among the facilities visited were the new Faculty of Education building, the newly constructed Science Blocks and the university’s new cafeteria.
The Vice-Chancellor also inspected the Postgraduate School, where she was received by the Dean, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, and the Director of Administration, Mrs. Saraya Ofem.
During the visit, she toured the school’s offices, conference hall and Information and Communication Technology unit, and monitored the ongoing postgraduate examinations.
Speaking after the exercise, Bassey urged students to attend lectures regularly and called on lecturers to intensify teaching to ensure that the university’s academic calendar remained on schedule despite the disruption caused by the industrial action.
She reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining academic standards and said the monitoring exercise would continue until normal academic activities were fully restored across all campuses.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied on the inspection by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Stella-Maris Okey; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Thomas Ojikpong; the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Victor Ndifon; and the Chief Security Officer, Superintendent Iwara Ibiang.
