The Cross River State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has declared its full support for the state government’s efforts to reclaim disputed oil wells and secure the constitutionally guaranteed 13 per cent offshore oil derivation currently under consideration at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMFC) in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Friday, the youth body described the ongoing hearing as a crucial step toward restoring the economic rights, fiscal stability and development prospects of Cross River State.
According to the NYCN, the loss of oil assets and derivation benefits over the years has negatively affected the state’s revenue base, with consequences for infrastructure development, youth empowerment, education, healthcare and overall socio-economic growth.
The council, led in the state by Comrade Emmanuel Olayi, said it believes the reclamation of the oil wells and derivation funds is lawful, justifiable and necessary to secure a better future for present and future generations of Cross Riverians.
The youths commended Governor Bassey Otu for what they described as courage, diligence and strategic leadership in pursuing the claim through constitutional and legal channels.
The statement praised the governor and the state leadership for demonstrating commitment to the welfare of the people and safeguarding the long-term interests of the state.
The NYCN assured the state government of the support, cooperation and mobilization of youths across Cross River State throughout the process, stressing its commitment to peaceful advocacy, civic engagement and constructive participation.
It also called on the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission and the National Boundary Commission to conduct the ongoing deliberations with transparency, fairness and objectivity, guided by constitutional provisions, equity and facts.
The youth body further appealed to federal authorities, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support Cross River State in what it described as a legitimate and just cause.
“The youths of Cross River State remain united and resolute in standing with their government to reclaim what rightfully belongs to the state for sustainable development and shared prosperity,” the statement added.
The statement was signed by the NYCN Cross River State Public Relations Officer, Melchizedek David.
