CALABAR — The University of Cross River State has recorded strong performance in the latest accreditation exercise by the National Universities Commission, with science-based programmes emerging as top performers NEGROIDHAVEN can say.

Vice-Chancellor, Francisca Bassey, announced the results on Thursday during an emergency Senate meeting at the institution’s Calabar campus, disclosing that the Department of Plant Science Biology led the rankings with a score of 93.7 per cent.

According to her, Animal and Environmental Biology followed closely with 92.9 per cent, while Entrepreneurship Studies placed third with 91.2 per cent, reflecting what she described as a growing culture of academic competitiveness within the university.

Bassey said the overall outcome of the November–December 2025 accreditation exercise showed that all programmes presented by the institution secured full accreditation, except Childhood Education, which was granted interim status.

She noted that the high scores recorded by the leading departments reflected improvements in teaching quality, staffing, and infrastructure, adding that many of the programmes assessed were relatively new.

“The results reflect the commitment of our academic staff and the strategic efforts to strengthen programme delivery across departments,” she said.

The Vice-Chancellor particularly commended the Department of Plant Science Biology for its top ranking, singling out its Head of Department, Dr. Samuel Osim, for what she termed exemplary leadership.

As part of measures to sustain the momentum, Bassey pledged to upgrade laboratory facilities in the department, improve office infrastructure, and provide additional support tools for academic work.

Other programmes that secured full accreditation include Human Kinetics and Health Education, Urban and Regional Planning, Economics, Peace and Conflict Studies, Sociology, Banking and Finance, Marketing, Forestry and Wildlife, Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies, Information Systems, Software Engineering, and Industrial Chemistry.

The NUC accreditation exercise is a periodic assessment designed to evaluate academic standards in Nigerian universities, focusing on criteria such as curriculum content, staffing, physical facilities, and research output.

Observers say the latest results may enhance the institution’s academic standing and competitiveness, particularly as universities increasingly rely on performance metrics and accreditation outcomes to attract students and partnerships.
