Senator Rochas Okorocha, the federal lawmaker representing Imo West Senatorial District at the 9th Nigerian Senate, on Tuesday submitted a petition from medical interns at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) against the Chief Medical Director, Prof Ikpeme Ikpeme, requesting Senate’s intervention on their unpaid intern salary of over 11 months having worked from September 2020 till date without receiving a dime.

Petition was laid and referred to the Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to report back within four weeks.

Recall that last week, interns from the said University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH defied the advice of the Nigerian Police Force, DSS by staging a protest in Calabar to demand their unpaid 11 months salaries amounting to 480 million Naira from hospital management.

The interns who protested on major streets of Calabar from the hospital, to Etta Agbor and Governor’s Office peacefully, chanted solidarity songs while carrying placards with various inscriptions as “pay UCTH interns now”, “don’t harass us, Pay us now”, “11 months without interns salary”, amongst others.
