At the Saturday 12th February Cross River State Southern Senatorial District Stakeholders World Press Conference which held at the Diamond Hall of Transcorp Hotels, Calabar, former federal lawmaker, Prince Bassey Edet Otu, explained why guber aspirants in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in the state were yet to formally declare for the office of Governor in respect of the much-anticipated 2023 general elections across the country.

Sen. Otu traced the reasons underlying why governorship aspirants in the ruling APC in Cross River have not formally declared for public office are the bans on political activities which have not been lifted yet across the country, the security implications of political campaign activities at that level, the incumbency of the governor Ben Ayade administration still delivering on campaign promises, and the like.

The former federal lawmaker of the 8th Senate said that ‘I want to let you know that it is not as if the aspirants in the southern senatorial district are shy, they are capable, credible and ready… In terms of capacity, we have too many people with surplus capacity in the south.’

Speaking earlier, Otu noted that ‘the bans on political activities have not been lifted yet, when it is lifted the federal government will amplify the budget of security to take care of any exigency, any issues or occurrence that will rock the boat in that particular area, but that has not been done.

‘The little bit of politicking that happened here was because we had byelections in Akpabuyo and also in Ogoja-Yala which have come and gone, so for here, political activities have not really started, we still have a government in place that will have to deliver to the people to the last minute.

‘Very, very soon, I think the programmes are out, the announcement are going to come that bans on political activities have been lifted.

‘First of all, it is going to be primaries for the different political parties…’, he explained.
