The Director, Pre-Degree Programme, University of Calabar, Associate Prof. Genevieve Aglazor, has strongly recommended the Pre-Degree Programme as an added advantage to gaining admission into all NUC accredited programmes in the University of Calabar NEGROIDHAVEN can report.
Associate Prof. Aglazor made the recommendation in her office when briefing news men on the strategic role of the Pre-Degree Programme in facilitating admission for school leavers seeking tertiary education.
She said, though the Pre-Degree is sometimes undermined due to the quality of 0’level education that the students bring to the programme, she emphasized that Pre-Degree Programme provides the bridge between that learning gap and needed skills for university education.
According to her, the gap may have happened during their secondary school days, but how or where it happens is irrelevant considering the fact that the Pre-Degree Programme would bridge the gap and enable students to get admitted into the degree programme of their choice.
Highlighting the imperatives of taking advantage of what the Pre-Degree Programme offers, the Director said the Programme provides the basic foundation in a range of skills that the students need for a successful University education.
This is even as she stated that the programme will afford students to learn and develop theoretical understanding of practical skills in all the science base subjects, English Language, Comprehension Numeracy, Critical Thinking and Public Speaking among others.
The Director further informed that getting into a University is not as easy as one might think, noting that certain requirements must be met before one is accepted into the University for a degree programme.
While Urging applicants who wish to pursue their dream University Degree Course to seek a Pre-Degree programme, the erudite Director maintained that after the successful completion of the programme, candidates are admitted into Degree Programme to study any course of their choice.
This is even as she said candidates who enroll and complete the one year Unical Pre-Degree Programme, can be admitted into any of the juicy courses available in the College of Medical Sciences, Faculties of Law, Engineering, Management Sciences, Social Sciences, Vocational and Science Education, Environmental Sciences, and Oceanography.
Others are; Faculties of Arts/ Humanities, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Agric, Forestry and Wildlife Resources Management.
Associate Prof. Aglazor, who also informed that application into the 2023/2024 Academic session of the Pre-Degree Programme is currently ongoing, stated that, as a requirement, applicants must register for the upcoming JAMB noting that without a JAMB registration number, Pre-Degree cannot process applicants admission into Unical undergraduate programmes.
She said, applicants must also possess a minimum of 5 O’level credits at not more than two sittings inclusive of English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects for the Sciences base courses while those applying for Arts and Non-Sciences discipline must have five (5) credits pass including English Language and four other subjects relevant to the candidates desired course of study in the University.
