Hon. Nsemo co-sponsors motion to relocate refuse dump site at Lemna in Calabar

The State House of Assembly has taken keen interest in the environmental hygiene at LEMNA in Calabar Municipality.

The Honourable Member representing Calabar Municipality State Constituency in the 10th Cross River House of Assembly, Hon. Stanley Nsemo, on Thursday 6th July 2023, co-sponsored a motion calling on the State Government, Ministry of Environment and Waste Management Agency to relocate the dump site at Lemna road, Calabar NEGROIDHAVEN can report.

The motion which was sponsored by Hon. Francis Ogban and 5 other members, advised the relevant agencies to as a matter of urgency relocate the dump site as it is threatening the life of those resident in that locality.

On his part, Hon. Stanley informed the Speaker and the house that a new dump site has been purchased by the government at Idundu Ayanganse and Akamkpa.

In his submission, the lead sponsor of the motion, Hon. Francis Ogban, representing Biase State Constituency, acknowledged that though the dump site had existed before people moved into the locality, it has however became necessary to relocate it in view of the health hazards it poses to those residing in the vicinity.

He went further to highlight the health hazards the dump site pose to residents to include malaria and typhoid outbreaks associated with mosquitoes, air pollution, contamination of boreholes around the area, increased insecurity and low economic patronage, as per tourists attraction.

Contributing to the motion, the leader of the House and Member representing Odukpani, Rt. Hon. Francis Asuquo, said the dump site has been in existence for more than 20 years, which may have destroyed the entire land as a result of decay from the waste dump. He equally expressed fear that the entire water consumed by the residents must have been contaminated.

Other members who also contributed to the motion insisted that going forward, contents of dump trucks should be properly covered to avoid littering the roads with dirt, while praying for accelerated action on the relocation of the dump site.

The Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, appreciated the six sponsors of the motion, saying it came at the right time.

The house will reconvene on 11 July, 2023.
