Leadership Retreat in Rwanda Equips Governors with Adaptive Strategies for Developmental Challenges

Kigali – The Cross River State Governor, Sen. Prince Bassey Otu, recently participated in a 3-day Executive Leadership Retreat in Kigali, Rwanda, aimed at fostering dialogue on reimagining leadership and leveraging innovative technology. The retreat, which took place from August 24 to 26, 2023, was organised by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The event drew inspiration from Rwanda’s transformative journey and was designed to explore new avenues for leadership and socio-economic development NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.

Under the theme ‘Rethinking Leadership and Leading Systems,’ the retreat brought together first- and second-term Governors from 19 Nigerian States. The participants engaged in sessions that delved into Rwanda’s remarkable achievements in digital technology, urban planning, and socio-economic transformation. The event concluded with an exclusive private dialogue between the Governors and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.

The Executive Leadership Retreat provided a platform for exploring adaptive leadership strategies that can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. Matthias Z. Naab, Director of the UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa, highlighted the importance of leaders who can harness challenges for the betterment of their societies.

Although Governor Sen. Prince Bassey Otu was unable to attend due to prior commitments, the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, represented the state at the retreat. Rt. Hon. Peter Odey engaged in enlightening discussions with President Kagame, describing him as a refined leader who has spearheaded Rwanda’s transformation.

Reflecting on his experience, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey expressed confidence that Nigeria can achieve similar transformation with determination, innovation, and honest leadership. He emphasised that the lessons learned from Rwanda’s success story can be adapted to Nigeria’s developmental challenges.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, an independent organisation composed of Governors from all states in the country, has evolved into a critical link between government, development partners, and private organisations. This retreat provided a platform for Governors to collaborate, share insights, and develop strategies to address shared developmental challenges.

As Rt. Hon. Odey returned to Cross River on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, he was warmly received at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport by Commissioners and other government officials. The insights gained from the retreat are expected to contribute to the formulation of innovative strategies to drive development in the state.
