…Calls For Application For Admission
The Director of the University of Calabar, Top-Up Programme, Dr. Devalsam Imoke Eni has stated that the Top-Up Programme is a remedy for low class of degree acquired by candidates.
This is even as the Director has made a call for applications for admission into the University Top-Up Degree and HND Conversion Programmes.
Dr. Imoke Eni disclosed this in his office while fielding questions from journalists on why candidates who graduated from the University or polytechnic with a third-class, pass or lower classes of degree should take advantage of the establishment of a Centre for Top-up Degree Programme in the Institution.
He said the Top-up Degree Programme is an Advanced Level programme that has provision for suitable academic curriculum that facilitates the conversion from a HND certificate to Degree certificate.
According to him, the programme is also designed to encourage third-class Degree holders to acquire at least a second class degree which would give them more viable opportunities in the labour market.
He said the programme will create an enabling academic environment for Degree equality in the country, stressing that, the Top-up Degree programme will provide opportunities for manpower development to meet emergent and technological workplace requirements.
Dr. Imoke further informed that the programme will also facilitate career progression of Degree holders.
The Director said the programme is for one (1) academic session of two semesters for applicants with third-class Degree and HND while applicants with a pass degree, will be required to run the programme for the two (2) academic sessions (four semesters), adding, however, that any extension will attract full payment of official charges.
He maintained that candidates entering the Top-up Degree programmes, must apply for admission into the same programme they graduate from.
This is even as he said the Top-Up opportunity is open to all University graduates with a minimum of third class and pass degree from all NUC approved Universities, as well as HND graduates with at least Lower credit from approved Polytechnics.
According to the Director, to be admitted into the programme, Candidates must possess an NYSC discharge certificate, or exemption/ exclusion letters which must be presented along other relevant documents for admission. 
He also said the applicants must possess a minimum of Five (5) O’level credits in relevant subjects obtained in not more than two (2) sittings, adding that, English Language and Mathematics at credit level are compulsory requirements.
According to him, candidates must submit their application forms for admission into the proposed Top-Up Degree and HND Conversion Programme along with certified transcripts from the last institution they attended.
The Director further informed that UNICAL Centre for the Top-Up Degree have juicy courses available in the Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Physical Sciences, Faculty of Management Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Environmental Sciences.
Others include; Social Science Education, Educational Foundation Studies, Faculty of Vocational and Science Education among others.
