Cross River Marks World Humanitarian Day with a Call to “Act for Humanity”

Calabar – The Cross River State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, in collaboration with the Wife of the Governor, Rev. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, has celebrated World Humanitarian Day with a grand event that resonated with a powerful message: “Act for Humanity.” The event, which took place in Calabar the state capital was supported by prominent partners including CUSO, UNHCR, and ECEWS, and brought together a host of dignitaries, development partners, civil society organizations, and humanitarian workers NEGROIDHAVEN can say.

In her welcome address, the Hon. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Helen Agan Isamoh Egodo, underscored the significance of the day, reflecting on the global impact of humanitarian efforts. She noted that World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on 19th August, is more than just a date on the calendar—it is a day set aside to honor the selfless dedication of those who risk their lives to provide aid in the most dangerous and challenging conditions.

Dr. Egodo highlighted the historical context of the day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008, following the tragic bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad on August 19, 2003. The attack, which claimed the lives of 22 people, including the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, brought to the forefront the dangers faced by humanitarian workers worldwide.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s celebration, “Act for Humanity,” Dr. Egodo emphasized the urgent need for collective action in the face of escalating violence against humanitarian workers. She praised the courage, compassion, and resilience of humanitarian workers, describing them as the unsung heroes who bring hope to the most vulnerable populations during crises.

The event also featured remarks from Gov. Bassey Otu, delivered on his behalf by the Commissioner for Establishment, Lawrencia Ita. Gov. Otu echoed the theme’s call to action, stressing the power of collective efforts in addressing the root causes of crises and fostering inclusive partnerships. He urged all stakeholders to support humanitarian workers and prioritize humanity in their policies and practices.

Throughout the event, the ministry reiterated its commitment to coordinating and providing humanitarian services in Cross River State. Dr. Egodo detailed the ministry’s mandate, which includes developing humanitarian policies, managing disaster response, and overseeing social inclusion and protection programs. She called on stakeholders to collaborate with the ministry in various areas, such as policy development, capacity building, and the provision of resources for disaster victims and vulnerable populations.

The celebration was not only a tribute to the bravery and selflessness of humanitarian workers but also a reminder of the ongoing challenges they face. With crises becoming more frequent and severe, the need for a unified and compassionate response has never been greater.

As the event concluded, participants were reminded that the mission to “Act for Humanity” extends beyond the day’s activities. It is a call to each individual and organization to take responsibility for one another, to prioritize the most vulnerable, and to work together towards a more compassionate and just world.
