Calabar, Cross River State – Rt. Hon. (Chief) Orok Otu Duke, Ph.D., the distinguished Cross River State Representative on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and a towering figure in Nigerian public service, politics, arts, and sports development, marks his 65th birthday today.
Born on July 24, 1961, in Calabar South, Cross River State, Chief Duke has built a remarkable career spanning legislation, media, culture, sports, and community leadership. A product of prestigious institutions including St. Patrick’s College and Hope Waddell Training Institute in Calabar, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree from the University of Calabar in 1986 and an MFA (or MBA) in Media in 1991. He has pursued doctoral studies, with his Ph.D. noted as in view.
Chief Duke’s political journey began in 1992 when he was elected to the Cross River State House of Assembly (CRSHA) representing the Calabar South 1 State constituency. He quickly rose to the position of Deputy Speaker, showcasing exceptional leadership. He served multiple terms in the Assembly, and held advisory roles. In 2014, he represented the Niger Delta Zone at the National Conference in Abuja.
His contributions extend beyond the legislature. As Special Assistant on Information and Culture to the Cross River State Government (1994–1996), he played a pivotal role in establishing the state’s modern radio and television stations and successfully coordinated the hosting of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) in 1994. He later served as Commissioner/Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission (2015–2019).
Currently serving as Cross River State’s representative on the NDDC Board, Chief Duke continues to advocate for development projects, youth empowerment, responsible parenting policies, and the advancement of the state within the Niger Delta region. He is recognized for his active support of initiatives like sports development, particularly table tennis, where he has served as Cross River State’s Sports Ambassador since 2007.
An accomplished entrepreneur and creative, Chief Duke founded Duke and Duke Media Limited in 1987, providing media consultancy services. A literary enthusiast and member of the London Poetry Society and the Society of Nigerian Theatre Artistes (SONTA), he has authored works such as Sentinels (Farewell Bakassi) and Treasures. His artistic and cultural contributions have earned him international honors from cities including Detroit, Indianapolis, and Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
In traditional spheres, he holds revered titles including Adaidaha of Efik Eburutu and Otuekong of Atakpa Ikot Effiom, reflecting his deep roots and influence in the Efik community. He is married and blessed with four children.
