CALABAR – A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Senator representing Cross River South, Senator Gershom Bassey, has endorsed the Cross River State Government‘s ongoing efforts to secure the allocation of 300 oil wells to the state, describing the initiative as a potential economic game-changer.
Speaking during a media chat, Bassey said the successful allocation of the oil wells would significantly improve the state’s revenue profile and create fresh opportunities for economic growth and development.
He expressed optimism that the move, if realised, would transform the fortunes of Cross River by strengthening its resource base and enhancing its capacity to fund critical infrastructure and social services.
According to the former senator, the state stands to benefit immensely from increased oil revenues, which could accelerate development across key sectors of the economy.
Bassey commended the administration of Governor Bassey Edet Otu for pursuing the matter, noting that securing the oil wells would represent a major milestone in the state’s quest to maximise its natural resource potential.
He said, “The ongoing efforts by the Cross River State Government to secure the possible allocation of 300 oil wells are commendable. Such a development has the potential to turn around the fortunes of the state.”
The former lawmaker urged all stakeholders to support initiatives capable of strengthening the state’s economy, stressing that increased access to oil resources would place Cross River in a stronger fiscal position to address developmental challenges.
Bassey also called for prudent management of any additional revenues accruing to the state, emphasizing that the benefits should translate into improved infrastructure, job creation, economic diversification and better living conditions for residents.
