Calabar—The 2024 Cross River Trade Fair, one of Nigeria’s largest economic and cultural showcases, is underway at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar, highlighting the rich heritage and economic resources of the state’s local government areas. Organized by the Cross River State Ministry of Commerce in collaboration with the Calabar Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (CALCIMA) and the Ikom Chamber of Commerce, this 11-day event aims to boost entrepreneurship, promote strategic investments, and connect local businesses to global markets NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.
Among the standout participants at this year’s fair are Bakassi and Akpabuyo Local Government Areas, both bringing their unique identities and resources to the fore.
Bakassi’s Agricultural Showcase
Bakassi Local Government Area stole the spotlight on the opening day by being the only LGA to exhibit its agricultural produce. Their booth featured an impressive array of locally sourced goods, including tapioca (Edita Iwa), maize, crayfish, shrimps, prawns, palm fruit (Eyop), Aidan fruit (Uyayak), coconut (Isip), and dry fish. The booth attracted dignitaries, including the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Peter Odey, who personally purchased some of the items.
Speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of Bakassi LGA, Hon. Christiana Eso, highlighted the importance of the trade fair in attracting investments and promoting Bakassi’s economic potential. She encouraged all Bakassi indigenes to attend the upcoming Bakassi LGA Day on Monday, November 25, which promises a vibrant display of the area’s culture and heritage.
Akpabuyo’s Call to Action
Akpabuyo Local Government Area, led by Chairman Hon. Emmanuel Effiong Bassey, is also preparing for a grand showcase at the trade fair. A statement from the Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ekpo Effiom, called on Akpabuyo indigenes to unite in presenting the LGA’s rich resources and traditions.
The Akpabuyo stand will feature fresh fish, dry fish, crayfish, snails, plantains, okra, palm oil, limestone, and native chalk (Ndom). The LGA also plans to highlight its signature culinary delights, including 404 (dog meat), fufu (Usung Iwa), and beverages like palm wine and Ufofob (local dry gin).
The Akpabuyo LGA Day, scheduled for Monday, November 25, will be a cultural extravaganza showcasing traditional crafts, performances, and colorful attires, including the 2023 Akpabuyo Cultural Carnival outfit (Usobo Ye Onyonyo).
