A major step toward political stability was achieved in Etung Local Government Area on Wednesday, following the peaceful resolution of a leadership crisis within the Legislative Council. The crisis, which stemmed from an attempted impeachment of the Council Leader, Hon. Ekubnse ThankGod, was addressed through a high-level mediation effort led by prominent Etung stakeholders NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.
The reconciliation meeting, hosted at the residence of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, brought together key political actors from the area—including the council chairman, councillors, political appointees, former local government chairmen, and other community leaders—who collectively sought to de-escalate tensions and restore order.
Briefing the press after the meeting, Prof. Owan-Enoh described the outcome as a “commendable success,” noting that the session allowed all parties to express their views and agree on a path forward.
“Following sincere deliberations, it was resolved that the Council Leader should issue an apology and demonstrate greater inclusiveness in leadership,” he stated. “The councillors, for their part, admitted that their actions were taken without adequate consultation, and have pledged to work collaboratively moving forward.”
The SSG emphasized that the intervention was not intended to interfere with the independence of the legislative arm but to provide guidance and prevent administrative dysfunction.
“Our concern is ensuring that governance at the grassroots remains effective. This requires a working relationship built on mutual respect and communication,” he said, advising the council chairman to maintain close engagement with the legislature.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of Etung, Hon. Henry Anom, described the crisis as a typical internal challenge, not uncommon in democratic institutions, especially at the local level.
“What matters most is how such issues are resolved. I’m pleased with the maturity displayed by all parties in reaching an amicable resolution,” he remarked.
Hon. Kingsley Isong, Member representing Etung in the State House of Assembly, also commended the peaceful outcome, stressing that dialogue must remain the first resort in resolving political disagreements.
In his contribution, Barr. Gilbert Agbor, Special Adviser to the Governor on Asset Management and Recovery, urged councillors to view their current roles as platforms for leadership development and to avoid actions that could derail their future prospects.
In his remarks, Hon. Ekubnse ThankGod expressed appreciation to the stakeholders for their timely intervention and pledged to lead with greater consultation and humility.
“This process has been a valuable learning experience, and I am committed to fostering unity and effective leadership within the council,” he said.
The successful intervention has paved the way for renewed cooperation within the Etung Legislative Council, marking a positive step toward stability and enhanced governance at the grassroots.
