CALABAR — Members of the 10th Cross River State House of Assembly receive a consolidated monthly package of up to ₦2.4 million, covering basic salary, overhead costs, and staff salaries, the Chief Whip of the House, Rt. Hon. Hilary Bisong, has disclosed.
The revelation came during an informal interaction around the Ernest Etim Bassey Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Calabar on Thursday afternoon.
Bisong, a three-term lawmaker representing Boki II State Constituency, stated that ordinary members of the Assembly earn a basic salary of approximately ₦680,000, while ranking members take home around ₦750,000 monthly. However, another lawmaker in the person of Hon. Stanley Nsemo, who is a member of the same Assembly disclosed that a first term member of the 10th CRSHA is alleged to earn a basic salary of N755,000.00 only, while a ranking member takes home a difference of N300,000 in addition.
In addition to this, each member is entitled to ₦1.5 million for overhead expenses and ₦200,000 earmarked for payment of aides, including personal assistants, special advisers, and media aides.
When pressed on other possible revenue channels, Bisong denied knowledge of additional subheads but later acknowledged the provision of the Cross River State Local Government Law (2025, as amended), which mandates that 1% of all Local Government allocations be remitted to the State Assembly for oversight functions.
He clarified that the provision was recently increased from 0.5% to 1% but revealed that the Assembly was yet to receive any disbursement under this subhead since the amendment was passed last year. In a discussion with another lawmaker, Hon. Nsemo of Calabar Municipality State Constituency argued they have received thit only once or twice.
The confirmation of the ₦2.4 million monthly package offers rare insight into the financial provisions for state lawmakers, amid ongoing public curiosity regarding the funding of legislative activities and constituency engagements.
