A federal lawmaker representing the Boki/Ikom Federal Constituency, Victor Abang, has rolled out his midterm performance report, outlining his legislative milestones, constituency interventions and policy initiatives, alongside the distribution of Christmas support items estimated at ₦48 million to constituents NEGROIDHAVEN can report.
Abang unveiled the scorecard during a series of town hall meetings and constituency briefings held across Boki, where he said the engagement was aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and informed public assessment of his performance in office.
The lawmaker explained that the decision to publicly present his achievements was driven by the need to counter misinformation, particularly on social media, and to provide verifiable evidence of his work in the National Assembly.
According to him, governance often presents realities that differ from campaign promises. He noted that while some pledges could not be fulfilled due to prevailing constraints, several impactful projects were executed, including interventions that were not originally part of his campaign agenda.
Abang cited the expansion of network connectivity to rural communities as a major achievement, explaining that although it was not promised during campaigns, the opportunity emerged after he assumed office. He disclosed that 35 communities have so far been connected with telecommunication masts, improving communication and economic activities, while more communities are scheduled for intervention.
Reflecting on his time in the House of Representatives, Abang said his legislative focus has been guided by effective representation, advocacy and the protection of community interests. He recalled sponsoring a motion on July 5, 2023, concerning the Nigeria Cameroon boundary dispute affecting communities in Cross River state.
He explained that the motion, which received overwhelming support in the House, led to the establishment of an ad hoc committee and has resulted in the Federal Government halting plans that could have led to the ceding of over 10,000 hectares of Nigerian land to Cameroon, including parts of Biajua and Danare communities.
Abang noted that the halted demarcation exercise had ignored recognised colonial boundary markers such as Pillar 113A, warning that failure to intervene would have resulted in significant territorial loss.
On healthcare delivery, the lawmaker highlighted the facilitation of over N300 million worth of medical equipment to the Primary Health Centre in Abo Ebam, as well as continued advocacy relating to the Federal Medical Centre serving the constituency.
In the area of environmental and economic development, Abang disclosed that he sponsored the National Park Service Amendment Bill seeking to establish the Okwangwo National Park Unit as an independent national park. He said the initiative is expected to enhance conservation, create employment opportunities and ensure that economic benefits accrue directly to host communities.
He also revealed ongoing engagements with national and international stakeholders to secure approvals for infrastructure projects, including road access within the national park, to improve connectivity and stimulate economic activities.
As part of the engagement, Abang presented a compendium of his legislative and constituency activities titled The Banjuere, which details projects executed within his first two years in the National Assembly, including a mini stadium project, telecommunications expansion and health sector interventions.
The lawmaker also distributed Christmas gifts valued at N48 million to constituents, describing the gesture as part of his commitment to sharing democratic dividends and cushioning the effects of economic hardship during the festive season.
Abang assured constituents that the midterm scorecard represents work in progress, stressing that more bills, motions and constituency focused projects would be pursued before the end of his tenure. He urged residents to remain engaged and constructive, reaffirming his commitment to transparent, people oriented and results driven representation.
