Basic education in Bekwarra Local Government Area of Cross River State has received a boost with the commissioning of a two-classroom block at Olokpa Primary School, a project aimed at improving learning conditions and reducing overcrowding in the rural community.
The classrooms were commissioned on Wednesday, February 4, by the Member representing Obudu/Bekwarra/Obanliku Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Peter Akpanke, as part of ongoing constituency-level education infrastructure interventions.
Community leaders said the new facility would significantly ease pressure on existing classrooms, which had been overstretched by growing enrolment. They noted that the modern structure would provide a more conducive environment for pupils and teachers, particularly at the foundational level of learning.
Speaking during the commissioning, Councillor representing Beten Ward in the Bekwarra Legislative Assembly, Hon. James Ugar Godwin, described the project as timely and impactful, noting that education infrastructure remains a critical need in many rural communities across the local government area.
On behalf of the Olokpa community, Mr. Sylvester Obri said the classroom block would not only decongest existing learning spaces but also attract teachers to the school, given the improved facilities. He added that the project had restored confidence in the public primary school system within the community.
“The importance of this project cannot be overemphasised,” Obri said, noting that the new classrooms were equipped with modern fittings designed to support effective teaching and learning.
Also speaking at the event, the Special Adviser on Aviation to the Governor of Cross River State, Mr. Ken Aklah, described the investment in basic education as a long-term strategy for community development, stressing that infrastructure in schools plays a critical role in shaping future leadership.
He observed that the commissioning in Olokpa was part of a series of education-related projects being inaugurated across communities within the federal constituency, reflecting sustained attention to grassroots development.
In his remarks, Hon. Akpanke said the project was driven by the need to strengthen public education at the foundational level, noting that improved school infrastructure contributes directly to better learning outcomes. He urged community members to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper maintenance.
The lawmaker also called for continued support and prayers for public office holders, emphasising that development initiatives are most effective when communities actively participate in safeguarding public assets.
Youth leaders at the event welcomed the intervention, describing it as a clear demonstration of commitment to education and human capital development in Bekwarra LGA.
The commissioning concluded with goodwill messages from community stakeholders, who expressed optimism that the new classrooms would enhance access to quality basic education and encourage higher school attendance in Olokpa and neighbouring communities.
