I have tried my best to run away and steer clear from this issue, but it keeps harping on my brain box, I don’t know the repercussion that will follow this essay but I am optimistic of a moral content and lessons that can help somebody somewhere, this indeed is worth the mud to be thrown at me; it’s a small price to pay for the emancipation of our people and to save a soul.
Enough of the much ado on the gruesome killing of innocent Mr. Dominic Modey, his killers didn’t come from space, they live among us, they are our friends and political boys, the car and armories they used were either bought by us or from proceeds of a job we gave them, we have been very supportive to them consciously or unconsciously, we have to get up and put an end to this before it creates more craters on the fabrics of our existence.
Unconsciousness is a state which occurs when the ability to maintain an awareness of self and environment is lost; we therefore can be sponsors of cultism or even cultists without our primary knowledge.
The Unconscious Cultist
Until last Sunday, I was Unconscious of the fact that I was a cultist, in my whole life I have never formally pledged allegiance to any cult group, even when they came calling for me as a union president, I had since detected the emptiness in their activities and the senselessness in their objectives. While the news of the cult clash in Ogoja broke, friends and family knew I was in Ogoja, unfortunately my phone was switched off due to the usual epileptic power supply; I woke up on Sunday morning to put on my phone only to meet pending messages checking my whereabouts immediately my mother’s call entered, from her panting voice I could smell fear and that she has been trying to reach me, she asked where I was and how I was coping; I had already spent two days in Ikom but I told her that I was still in Ogoja to see her reactions she instructed me to move to Calabar with the next available vehicle, I asked her what the problem was, she enquired in reply whether I was not aware of the cult fight in Ogoja, I asked what business I had got to do with that or whether she had pledge loyalty on my behalf to any cult group without my knowledge, she couldn’t hide her feelings she broke it in her normal pidgin language “my pickin some of the friends wia you dey waka with no deh clear me”, I put an end to her call and called for a meeting.
Lessons
—If your boyfriend is that tough cult guy in town, you always seat out with him whenever he hangs out with his niggers, my dear sister you are an unconscious cultist.
—If you have three close friends and two of them are cultists, my dear you are an unconscious cultist.
—If eight (8) out of every ten (10) persons cannot vouch for you that you aren’t a cultist my dear you are an unconscious cultist.
—there’s this one person people always look out for whenever they are looking for you, if he is a cultist, my dear you are an unconscious cultist.
If you fall under any of this category my dear brother, pause…change your association and committee of friends, but for now please run away whenever they is a cult clash, you can never be exempted, you are an unconscious cultist.
The Unconscious Sponsors
This is mostly for our community and political leaders, they have been oiling the engine of this monster called cultism, consciously or unconsciously, this is not to drag anybody to the mud, but for a sober reflection, innocent Dominic Modey is dead and gone, nobody knows who will be next, it may be you the unconscious sponsor or me the unconscious cultist, see this:
—If there’s any cultist on the street who knows he has your political patronage and that you will always come for him whenever security agencies catch up with him, you are an Unconscious Sponsor.
—If you empower cult guys so much and make cultism a lucrative business that other young men around town envy them you are an Unconscious Sponsor.
—If you have never bought JAMB form for the best WAEC students but you have bought cars for tough guys in town for political patronage or as rewards for political stewardship you are an Unconscious Sponsor
—If you have ever paid cult guys to help you hijack materials during elections, you are an Unconscious Sponsor.
—If you have ever shared revenue generating points to different cult groups you are an Unconscious Sponsor.
—If you believe in the polity of littering our streets with touts in the name of emblem or revenue generation you are an Unconscious Sponsor.
—If you have never scolded your followers on the effects of cultism you are an Unconscious Sponsor.
We shall all be held accountable by God for lives lost to cultism, while hard guys are the perpetrators we are the accomplice, they bought the bullets from the handout we gave them, the cars they use to execute their missions was either bought by us or from proceeds of the connect we gave them.
Finally, I call on all well meaning youths to come out and claim ownership of their political environment, guns and machetes don’t have voters cards, they don’t multiply the votes of those who own them, let us wake up and redirect our ship else we sink.
I beckon on my friends and brothers who are members of one group or the other, to take a sober reflection and denounce membership of such societies, cultism is outdated and old fashion, it has never help anybody permanently, your mate is the president of France at 39 while we are in Ogoja struggling to head a cult gang and collect dues at our age.

I call on Hon Jarigbe Agom of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon Peter Odinga of the 8th Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Thomas Udam (Honorable Commissioner for Power) Barr Joe Abang (Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice) and all well meaning leaders of Ogoja to call the youths together for a reorientation. We can afford to look away today because we were not directly affected, this monster call cultism may be cooking something more dangerous for us tomorrow, more so Modey’s two helpless kids are still waiting for the return of their father but Modey is in yonder staring at all of us to see what efforts we will make to put an end to this monster and avoid a re-occurrence; he is also looking at the help we will be to his two helpless kids, he is no longer on Facebook, he didn’t see all of his pictures that displayed on our timeline.
Our society is in dire need of help, Our ship is sinking, children have caused the houses their parents suffered to built to be burned down for nothing, there is indeed no better time for us to put an end to this than now.
RIP uncle Modey I regret my role as an Unconscious Cultist all this while, for the new life I shall live from today I pray God grants me the grace and protection to continue to do so in Remembrance of you.
