There’s call from a section of Nigerian social media users for a celebration of one Miss Nuela Echebima, a first class graduate of law from the University of Nigeria, Nsụka and a front row student in many other regards NegroidHaven can report. This development is coming on the hills of the Firdaus Amasa Hijab/law school saga that is trending on social media.
One Alvan Chinagorom Emerald Ilo has argued to the effect that instead of biker over religiously inspired sentiment of Hijab wearing on the occasion of oath taking to the Nigerian Bar, the Nigerian public should rather celebrate the impressively intelligent graduate in Miss Echebima who graduated best at four fronts :
-First Class University of Nigeria Nsụka, 2016.
-Best Graduating Student University of Nigeria Nsụka, 2016.
-First Class Nigerian Law School, 2017.
-Best Graduating Student Nigerian Law School, 2017.
For Ilo, the Hijab saga could trend more than academic excellence, ‘Because we have a country where mediocrity trumps excellence. Because we have a country where noodles and anarchists break codes conduct to earn cheers.
Because we have a Nigeria where the reward for excellence is silence and deprivation’.
He continued,’ A country where cassock and hijab command higher values than humanity. A country controlled by we and us, of Islamic and Christian Governors forums. A country of Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Governors forums’.
It will be recalled that Miss Firdaus Amasa, a graduate of the University of Ilorin, had been denied access to the ceremony of being inducted into the Nigerian Bar after insisting on wearing hijab during the ceremony.
She was specifically refused entry into the hall for insisting to wear the wig on top of her hijab – a headscarf.
It’s rather a pity that religion, instead of inspiring sound norms and values in us is to incite the most banal of concerns in Nigeria. It’s surprisingly demoralising that the condemnable fanaticism in Ms Amasa could distracts us from the hard work, tact, intelligence, diligence etc in Ms Echebima! What values should we be celebrating in Nigeria and what values are left to be bequeathed to the next generation!? Hmmm!
