Sen Gershom Bassey donates medical equipment, adopts Ekpo-Abasi PHC amidst tears, excitement

As the State makes steady progress towards the actualization of Universal Health Coverage across board with the upgrading and renovation of Primary Health Centers across the State, the Senator representing the Southern Senatorial District of the State, Sen. Gershom Bassey, has yet again donated equipments and medical consumables to the Ekpo-Abasi PHC in Calabar South LGA.
Dr Chioma Bassey who made the donations on behalf of her husband said the idea is to bring quality healthcare to the grassroots, especially as it concerns women and children. She said the Distinguished Senator will be replicating the feat across the seven Local Government Areas in no particular order.
"Our women and children are a top priority and reducing maternal mortality is our target, which is why we thought it important to adopt this PHC and provide all these equipments and medical consumables to the people of Ekpo-Abasi community", Dr. Chioma said.
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Inyang Asibong, commended the thoughtfulness of the Distinguished Senator to cater to the health needs of his people especially the women and children who are the target beneficiaries of the donations. She said the maternal mortality rate of the country is in triple digits, the move would go a long way in reducing the incidence. She also said the initiative is in sync with the vision of His Excellency, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade, the Executive Governor of Cross River State who has put health first. While the Director General of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Betta Edu, urged the PHC workers to continue to give their best to maintain their championship as the best performing PHC in the State.
The equipment donated include a refrigerator, a Generating set, fans, beds and mattresses, chairs and benches, rechargeable lanterns, medical screens and a host of other medical consumables.
Meanwhile the Council of Chiefs, youths and resident of Ekpo-Abasi community who came out en-masse were full of praises for the Distinguished Senator and unanimously lent their support for a second term in the red chamber for the Senator. They said Distinguished Senator Gershom Bassey has shown shown effective representation and proven beyond every reasonable doubt that he is the man for the job.
