Madam Monica Livinus Ocha, mother to Mr Richard Ocha, Saturday, passed on after struggling with grave unidentified illness.
Mr Ocha is the Cross Riverian of Boki I State Constituency who approached Dr Itam Abang, the lawmaker representing him at the 8th Cross River State House of Assembly, for financial succour to help treat his ailing but now late mother, but, was dismissed on the basis that she wasn't elected to pay bills of constituents but to make laws.
Eye witness, blogger Ukorebi Essien of TheDailyNewsNG.com quoted Abang as saying, 'That's not my business if you like you bring her here, am I a Doctor? When am done with what am doing here, I will just enter my car and go away. I was elected to make laws and not to give assistance. After all how many votes did you give me. I spent money in your ward and your people did not vote for me. I lost in your ward'.
The incident which occurred on Wednesday 15 February 2018 shortly after the 8th Assembly passed the N1. 3 trillion so-called Budget of Kinetic Crystallisation caused a week-long furore in Cross River state especially on social media space.
As at press time, it is yet to be known whether Abang had demonstrated any form of financial commitment or consistently insisted that she's not elected to pay medical bills of constituents. But, it seems she didn't, if she did, I stand to be corrected.
BLOGTORIAL
I still find it very difficult not to associate the passing of late Mrs Ocha with the gross irresponsibility of Hon Abang for obvious reasons : if she had responded appropriately then, the deceased may not have kicked the bucket at least now. Again, if she had responded earlier, when this case was budding, the story may have been different today. Or, worst still, she shouldn't have made such an irresponsible statement in public and to a constituent.
It's demoralising to know that the type of Abang are the one making laws for us in Cross River. Majority of her type occupy public offices in Nigeria, Africa and the Global South. Hmmm!
I propose that a recall process for Abang be initiated for this undeserving lawmaker.
Be that as it may, may the soul of the departed rest in peace and may God give the family of the deceased especially Mr Richard Ocha the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
