Comr Okang charges students to be exceptional, different as aspiring leaders

Members of the Leadership Club of Eastern Secondary School, Calabar yesterday visited the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Comrade Asu Okang on a fact finding mission on the rudiments of leadership and challenges therein.

Intrigued by their enthusiasm, Comrade Asu Okang charged them to be different, exceptional and more refined in their thoughts as leaders in the making, thereby serving as an example to their peers. He inferred that leadership is a function of thought urged the students to broaden their horizon and be good imitators of good leaders.

Comrade Okang who informed the Students that a good leader must be Sacrificial, Compassionate, accommodating, understandable but at the same decisive, implored them to believe in themselves and their abilities and not be down casted by negative judgments, adding that leadership comes with great responsibilities and a level of Grace from God. He noted that leaders at every point in time are ordained by God but urged them to prepare themselves so that when the mantle of leadership falls on them, they would not be found wanting.

The Youth Commissioner explained that there are various challenges plaguing leadership but informed that their creativity and peculiarity as youth with a difference will always give them an edge over such challenges and to tackle them appropriately.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Imoke Bassey and Mrs. Janet Conatus respectively informed the Commissioner that members of the Leadership Club of the Eastern Secondary School have yearned endlessly to visit him and learn the ropes of leadership from a young person who has done exceptionally well as a Commissioner among his contemporaries and whom they have seen as a worthy mentor. They appreciated the Commissioner for giving the students the opportunity to interact with him despite his tight schedules.
