As the presence of Corps Members in almost every facet of life in the state has continued to yield positive results, Cross River State Governor, Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade has maintained that the National Youth Service Corps remains essential and relevant in society today NEGROIDHAVEN can say.
The applause was contained in the Governor’s speech today while he was addressing the 2020 Batch A, Stream 1 set of Corps Members during their swearing-in ceremony held at the State’s Permanent Orientation Camp in Obubra.
Governor Ayade who spoke through his representative, Commissioner for Youth Development and Skills Acquisition, Mr. Signor Omang Idiege promised that the State Government will continue to collaborate with the NYSC in the State to ensure the expansion of Corps Members’ interest in skills acquisition.
He said, “You are therefore to pay specific attention to all the skills that you will be exposed to within the three weeks of the orientation training. What you will learn in the skill acquisition will greatly empower you to create wealth now when you are young and make you entrepreneurs and possible employers of labour in the future.
“I also urge you to bring the good values your parents must have imbued in you to the service year and see the communities you would be servicing as extensions of your homes.” He admonished them to acquaint themselves with the tenets of the scheme and to also get familiarized with the cultures and traditions of the people of the State.
The Governor who opined that the State government will remain firm in her resolve to assist the Management of the scheme in the State in several ways towards ensuring that the State continues to benefit from the NYSC urged Corps Members to imbibe the true spirit of the orientation course by paying specific attention to all lined up programmes.
He appreciated Camp Officials, especially the state Coordinator for bringing the Camp to enviable standard, promising that the Government will continue to support and encourage Corps Members by fulfilling its statutory obligations to the Scheme and providing a peaceful atmosphere for optimal performance of Corps Members within available resources.
In his message, Cross River state Commissioner for Youth Development and Skills Acquisition, Mr. Signor Omang Idiege who was represented by the Head of Administration of the Ministry, Mr. Egbala Edom admonished the Corps Members to identify any area of projects, programmes and activities where their talent may bring to bear positive results and key into such areas.
He noted that in the recent past, their predecessors had participated in the Calabar carnival, the garment factory and the state agro innovations which have contributed to the collective goal of making Cross River a better place.
“Your posting to Cross River state for under the pragmatic leadership of a digital and enterprise friendly governor, is a fortune that will translate to mutual benefit for Corps Members and the state.
“The serenity of Calabar as reflected in her peaceful atmosphere and investor friendly history, has over the years attracted investors, tourists and Corps Members”, the Commissioner who is also the Governing Board Chairman of NYSC Cross River stated.
Earlier in his address, NYSC Cross River State Coordinator, Alhaji Mohammed Nakamba revealed that a total number of 1, 804 made up of 1, 000 Males and 804 Females were successfully registered at the end of registration. He charged the Corps Members to make friends and build relationships that will bring positive memories of their stay in Cross River in the years ahead.
The Coordinator added that “The Nation has committed huge resources to making you comfortable and this is evident in the recent increase of the non-regular monthly allowance paid to Corps Members. You should redouble your effort to justify the efforts of the Federal Government in this regard.”
Highlights were administration of Oath of allegiance on the Corps Members which was administered by the representative of the State Chief Judge, Justice Emmanuel Ubua, sample signing of Oath forms by representatives of the various Platoons, thug of war by the Man ‘O’ War and group photographs.
