The Cross River Ministry of Environment has began the construction of a new market for road side traders who have erected illegal structures along the drive way and those selling on the water channels.
The new market is directly opposite the Marian market, inside the premises of Calabar Municipality, just behind the Unity Bank.
The Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Mfon Bassey, in company of the House of Assembly member representing Calabar Municipality, Hon. Efa Esua, HOLGA of Calabar Municipality and Traditional leaders, visited the new site with a design that will accommodate shops, parking space, a canteen among many others facilities.
The construction of the market is in partnership with Calabar Municipality local government area.
Hon. Bassey disclosed that the move to open a new market will create sanity along the marian way and also reduce traffic and allow for free flow of water during the rainy season.
He lamented that most flooding activities in the area was caused by the blockade of drainage system by some traders who have erected structures on the water ways.
He assured that upon completion, traders in the affected area would be relocated to the new site where shops will be made available for them.
He said that the state government under the leadership of Sen. Benedict Ayade, was committed in restoring and sustaining a clean and green environment for businesses to thrive.
