CITN calls for introduction of a programme on taxation in UNICAL

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, has disclosed that the Institution is open to the idea of introducing an academic programme on taxation NEGROIDHAVEN can report.

Prof. Obi disclosed this while responding to a request made by some officials of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) who were in the Institution to pay a courtesy call on her.

The VC said it would be good for the CITN to work towards raising a proposal that would set the machinery in motion for the introduction of the programme.

The Vice Chancellor also said that the introduction of the programme would further expand the robust and rich curriculum offerings of the institution, adding that, it will also increase the number of tax practitioners as well as place the institution in her rightful place among the comity of institutions offering taxation as a degree programme in the country.

Prof. Obi who said her administration was always open to partnerships, commended the institute for organizing the tax week programme in Calabar, stressing that, it will avail tax payers the opportunity to bare their minds on the challenges bedeviling them.

Earlier, the President of CITN, Mr Adesina Adebayo, congratulated the Vice Chancellor on her emergence as the first female Vice Chancellor of the university, saying he is optimistic that her administration will do massive exploits.

Represented by the Vice President of CITN, Barr. Samuel Agbeluyi, he said the aim of the visit was to intimate the Vice Chancellor of the tax week programme of the CITN in Calabar, which is aimed at sensitizing and enlightening the tax payers.

The President who called for the introduction of an academic programme in taxation in the institution added that CITN will provide the needed support required to make the programme viable.

Adebayo also appealed to the Vice Chancellor to encourage the formation of Taxation Students Association in the institution to raise consciousness on the existence of taxation.

He further appealed that students and staff of the institution should be encouraged to register and sit for the institute’s professional examination as there are provisions for undergraduates and holders of professional qualifications from relevant professional bodies.

The event featured exchange of mementoes between the Vice Chancellor and officials of the CITN.
