Support for Girls, Boys and Women Initiative, SUGBWi a bourgeoining civil society organisation based in Cross River has called on the state government, religious leaders, traditional rulers, captain of industries, opinion leaders and the general public to prioritise the bridging of the wide gap in the digital divide across the country especially in Cross River.

The group made the call on Sunday as part of activities to mark the International Day of the Girl Child in Calabar the Cross River state capital city.

The Executive Director of SUGBWi, Hon. Grace Bassey, while addressing newsmen in the state observed that, ‘that there is an inequity in access to the Internet, the use of related devices as well as the acquisition of requisite skill set between boys and girls, men and women, etc is not arguable; so, there is need to bridge this obvious gap in the gender digital divide occasioned by connectivity, devices and use, skills and jobs’.

Continuing, Bassey who doubles as the Honourable member representing Ward 7 in Bakassi Legislative Council said ‘the girl child and woman irrespective of ethnicity, language, skill set, economic status and geographical origin is entitled to a happy life through living out their full potential.’

She called on relevant stakeholders to ensure that this happiness and inherent potential is fully realised.

The International Day of the Girl Child is observed every 11th October world over. The 2021 theme is –‘Digital generation. Our generation.’
