November 20 every year is celebrated as #WorldChildrensDay. Happy Children’s day to all children in Cross River State.
This year’s theme ‘Equality and Inclusion for every Child’ is a call to support children no matter their disability, family background, race or place of residence. Children do not choose when, where and how they will be born. Caregivers should ensure that children with special needs are not dehumanised in any way, form or shape.
Implementing authorities should ensure immediate and full implementation of relevant laws that promote inclusion, especially of children with special needs. A very important piece of legislation is the Disability Rights Law of Cross River State. The Law protects everyone with disability, including children.
On behalf of Child Protection Network (CPN) Nigeria, Cross River Chapter, I wish to use this opportunity to appeal to the current administration to put in place the Disability Affairs Commision as provided for in the Disability Rights Law, 2021. It is in the best interest of children to have this done. I wish to also call on the Cross River State House of Assembly to expedite work on the amendment of the Child Rights Law. I appeal to the Governor to assent as soon as the amendment bill is passed to him. This will go a long way to improve on the work that is done in the State for children.
Enjoy the celebration.
