A bill to establish the Federal College of Health Technology Bakassi and a bill to establish Federal University of Agriculture Akpabuyo have passed first reading on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The bills were sponsored by Hon. Joseph Bassey, member representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency in the House of Reps.

He said that the bills seek to bring development and improve on the economic status of the two local government areas of the state in Cross River South.

He explained that the Federal College of Health Technology will also restore hope and create a federal presence in Bakassi local government after several years of neglect and non proper resettlement of the Bakassi people.

On the proposed University of Agriculture in Akpabuyo, the lawmaker stated that Akpabuyo local government area has a vast land for agrarian activities which will also serve as research base for the institution if established.

He said that if properly harnessed, Akpabuyo local government area can become a food economy and production hub that will serve the markets in the state and also for external consumption.

According to him, the presence of the institutions, if established, will also help to reduce insecurity in the area and youth restiveness among the youths.
