Akamkpa, Cross River — In a political shift, Mr. Collins Njok Adiegbe, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Akamkpa 1 State House of Assembly seat during the 2023 general elections, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with over 100 loyal supporters in Awi Ward, Akamkpa Local Government Area NEGROIDHAVEN has confirmed.
The defection, which took place on 25th August, 2024, has been described as a watershed moment in the political landscape of Awi Ward. The event was marked by celebrations among the APC members, who welcomed Adiegbe and his followers with open arms. The ceremony was attended by key figures of the APC, including the ward and state executive members, village heads, commissioners, special advisers to the governor, and other party faithful.
In his address, the APC Ward Chairman, Prince Francis Itamba, expressed his delight over what he termed as a “dream come true.” He assured Adiegbe and his supporters of equal opportunities within the party, emphasizing that both old and new members would work together harmoniously. Prince Itamba described Adiegbe as a “bulldozer” who will strengthen the party’s efforts to secure electoral victories in future elections.
Speaking to the gathered crowd, Mr. Collins Njok Adiegbe explained his decision to leave the PDP, citing dissatisfaction and unfulfilled promises within the party. He expressed optimism about his future with the APC, praising the achievements of the current administration and stating that his move was motivated by a desire to contribute to the “sweetness” being brought to Awi Ward, the local government, and the state at large. “We have come to stay and support the party to win elections in order to move towards greater sweetness,” he said.
The Hon. Commissioner for Youths Development and Skills Acquisition, Hon. Barr. Ukam Ijom, also shared his excitement during an interview, describing Adiegbe as a “mover” whose entry into the APC is expected to bring about positive changes in Awi Ward and Akamkpa as a whole. He noted that the defection of Adiegbe and his supporters represents a significant boost to the APC’s political standing in the region.
