Obong of Calabar Inducts New Etubom and Otuekongs into Efik Traditional Council

Calabar—In a ceremony held on Friday, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the Obong of Calabar, inducted four prominent individuals into prestigious traditional roles within the Efik Eburutu Kingdom. The ceremony, which took place in the hallowed chambers of the Obong’s Palace, marked the coronation of HRH Etubom Ekong Esu Efa as Etubom of Adiabo Okut Ikang House in Western Calabar and the induction of three others as Otuekong, namely, Otuekong Offiong Andem Bassey, Otuekong Wing Cdr. Abasi Okon Etim Ekpo, and Otuekong Ene Ita Eyo NEGROIDHAVEN can report.

The Obong of Calabar, alongside the council, commended the inductees for their dedication to service and leadership. “These appointments represent a fusion of wisdom and innovation to guide the Efik Kingdom into a future of unity and progress,” the Obong remarked in Efik.

The event was a significant moment in the kingdom’s history, symbolizing the integration of fresh perspectives and a commitment to upholding the cultural heritage of the Efik people. The inductees, chosen for their contributions to the growth and preservation of the kingdom’s traditions and values, now hold vital positions within the Palace of the Obong of Calabar.

Among the newly inducted leaders, Offiong Andem Bassey stands out as the youngest Otu-Ekong in the history of the Efik Kingdom. Bassey, a former Best Graduating Student from the University of Calabar, brings a wealth of academic and cultural expertise to his new role. The title of Otu-Ekong, comparable to that of a knight in England, signifies a position of honor and innovation within the palace.

In his acceptance speech, Bassey expressed gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him. “This opportunity is both a responsibility and a privilege to contribute to the preservation and advancement of our rich Efik heritage,” he said.

According to sources, the ceremony highlights Efik’s enduring commitment to preserving its cultural identity while embracing new leadership ideas to propel the Kingdom toward prosperity.
