CALABAR — The Cross River State Government has mourned victims of the recent road accident involving students of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), while vowing to pursue justice and calling for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations NEGROIDHAVEN can report.
In a press statement issued by the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, the government expressed deep sympathy to the injured and families of those who lost their lives in the crash.
“We commiserate with those currently hospitalised and pray for their swift recovery. Our thoughts are also with families who have suffered painful losses,” the statement said.
Special Assistant Joseph-Kelvin Enyam assured the public that it has commenced interventions to support victims, including the coordination of medical treatment across multiple facilities such as the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), General Hospital, and other private clinics where the injured are receiving care.
According to the statement, the state is working with relevant authorities to ensure that all affected students receive adequate medical attention and necessary support.
Following preliminary assessments and eyewitness accounts, the government raised concerns over the circumstances surrounding the crash, indicating that reports of a truck driver veering off his lane while allegedly over-speeding are being taken seriously.
It assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, adding that anyone found responsible would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
The government also used the opportunity to call on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory bodies to intensify enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly speed limits and driver discipline.
“Preventive action remains critical to avoiding further tragedies on our roads,” the statement noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the government urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic laws and prioritise human life, stressing that the wellbeing of students and all road users remains a top priority.
The accident, which has drawn widespread concern across the state, has renewed calls for stronger road safety measures and accountability in traffic management.
