Wife of the Cross River State Governor, Her Excellency, Dr Linda Ayade represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong has flagged off the 1st round of the 2017 immunization plus days in Cross River State with a call on Cross Riverians to join hands to eradicate the disease.
Performing the exercise at the Primary Healthcare Centre, Kasuk, Calabar the governor wife said that Cross River is doing well in the fight against Polio and other vaccinated diseases. She thanked the traditional rulers and opinion leaders, the church, health workers and development partners for helping the state government in mobilising their wards and community to benefit from immunization exercises so as to rid the state of the dreaded diseases.
Stating further, Dr Asibong said His Excellency, Prof Ben Ayade is health conscious and does not want any child to die of vaccines preventable disease. “I hope that when next WHO comes to access Nigeria in Polio eradication Nigeria will be free and this can be achieved with the effort of everyone”.
Earlier speaking, the Permanent Secretary Mr Mark Echeghe who presented a statement from Director General Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu on the First Round Immunization Plus days 2017 said 92% immunization coverage recorded last year in the state is encouraging and expressed hope that by the end of this exercise we would have a 100% coverage with full eradication of Polio from the country.

He stated that His Excellency, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade administration places premium on the health sector of the state adding that he wishes to be known as a governor of healthy people.
“The state government has shown commitment to ensuring that Cross River is Polio free and disclosed that the state currently maintains an immunization coverage of 92% in 2016.
Dr Betta Edu called for all hands to be on deck to ensure that every child in the state is reached noting that she will be in the field next week for monitoring.
In a goodwill message earlier, the President of Rotary Club CRS, Mr Akabom Enebong stated that immunization is one of the strategies for the eradication of polio disclosing that Nigeria is one of the few countries where polio is still endemic. He thanked the Governor and other partners for providing logistics to enable the care givers reach every and cranny and nook of the state.
Godswill messages were also given by representatives of WHO, Mrs Grace Takon, Mr Ephraim Chukwu from UNICEF, Ginette Potentier a Canadian Volunteer from CUSO, Ward Development Chairman of Kasuk, Hon Ekpenyong Inang, and representative of Chairman House Committee on Health, Hon. Dr Ekpo Ekpo Bassey.
