The Chairman of the Cross River State Forestry Commission, George O’ben-Etchi, has called for stronger community participation in the protection and sustainable management of forest resources in the state.

O’ben-Etchi made the call during the inauguration of the Forest Management Committee for Ekong Anaku Community in Ekinta Clan, Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The event, which held at the palace of the Clan Head of Ekinta Clan, brought together forestry officials, community leaders and members of the newly inaugurated committee.

Speaking at the ceremony, the commission’s chairman said collaboration between the committee and officials of the Forestry Commission would improve the monitoring of forest reserves and ensure proper management of the ecosystem.

He explained that the committee would play key roles in maintaining forest boundaries, identifying environmentally sensitive areas and supporting demarcation activities aimed at protecting forest reserves.

According to him, the initiative forms part of the commission’s broader plan to strengthen sustainable forest management through community-based governance structures.

O’ben-Etchi added that members of the committee were selected through a consensus-driven process designed to guarantee transparency, fairness and adequate representation of the community.

“The committee will also assist in strengthening cooperation between the commission and host communities while promoting peaceful coexistence in forest management activities,” he said.

He further assured the committee of the commission’s technical and institutional support, noting that strong partnerships between government and local communities remain critical to achieving long-term conservation goals.

The forestry commission boss also urged residents and stakeholders to play active roles in protecting forest resources for future generations.

Responding, the Clan Head of Ekinta Clan and Chairman of the Forest Management Committee, Celestine Awor, commended the Forestry Commission for the initiative.

Awor expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in the committee and described the inauguration as a significant step towards preserving the forest heritage of the community.

He pledged the cooperation of the traditional council in ensuring compliance with existing forestry regulations.

Officials present at the ceremony included the Director of Conservation, Protection and Compliance, Ibiang Essien; the Zonal Coordinator, South East, Rose Ayang; and the Forest Officer for Oban, Charles Aki, among others.
