Fire Guts UNICAL Senate Chambers, VC Vows to Fish out and Punish Culprit

The Chambers of the University of Calabar Senate Building went up in flames on Thursday 26 May 2016.

The incident which took place around midnight was reportedly caused by an electrical spark from one of the air-conditioning units and quickly spread to other parts of the Chambers.

Staff of the Security Unit who were the first responders at the scene battled to contain the raging flames and were later joined by men of the State Fire Service.

According to the Deputy Chief Security Officer, ASP Jarlath Abang, the quick intervention of his men and the State Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the building and helped to extinguish the flames within one hour.

ASP Abang enumerated facilities affected by the fire to include air-conditioning units, public address system, PowerPoint projector and the entire furniture in the Chambers.

Speaking on the incident, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu, expressed sadness over the ugly development which he blamed on negligence and promised to launch a full-scale investigation to fish out the culprits.

Prof. Akpagu, who inspected the scene of the incident early Friday morning said any staff found to be culpable will be dealt with to serve as a deterrent to others.

He cautioned staff against the habit of leaving electrical appliances in their offices on at close of work.
