In his 2016 May Day message to Cross Riverians, Cross River State based social commentator, Prince Thomas Abi Jr., has charged both the state and federal governments as well as private firms to, 'work towards improving the minimum wage of workers'.

According to information received by our correspondence, Abi Jr., explained that, 'It is a thing of pity that while there is inflation in the prices of goods and services in the country, the wages of workers have barely increased'. The social commentator revealed that, 'The workers of Nigeria are suffering as a result of the high cost of living due to astronomical increase in commodities: From house rent, to feeding, transportation, health-care and many more'. Abi Jr., further rationalised corruption to stem from an unwholesome pay package for suffering civil servants who have indulge in smart means of survival.

He therefore charged the leadership of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the apex labour union in the state, to ensure that the minimum wage of workers is reviewed in an upward trend, 'In marking this year's workers day, I call on the leadership of the NLC to see to the fact that the minimum wage of workers is reviewed and implemented across the nation. States, organizations and establishments who do not implement the minimum wage when reviewed should be sanctioned severely', he said.
