Rt. Hon. Jones Eteng Williams, the Chairman House Committee of Finance and Appropriation and member representing Yakurr 2 State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly on Tuesday, 25th of October 2016 in a plenary session of the House, has asked the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) to render, as a matter of urgent public interest, explanation to Cross Riverians why the processes of elections into the Local Governments Council have not commenced.

Speaking in favour of a motion filed in by Hon. Hilary Bisong, the member representing Boki 2 State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Eteng argued that there was need for such public explanation, so that the House can understand if there were challenges faced by the commission, the House was not aware of.

The sponsor of the motion, Hon. Bisong in his presentation, stated clearly that the constitution have made provision for an enabling law mandating CROSIEC to conduct elections into local governments councils, quoting the local government Law, Cap L16, section 2 subsection 1. Hence the need for the commission to appear before the House to render explanations.

Also speaking in favour of the motion were Hon. Fred Osim, member representing Ikom 1; Rt. Hon. Okon Ephriem Calabar South 1. Hon. Okpo Oko Bassey Bakassi, Hon. Mathew Olori Akamkpa etc. In their various reactions, there all questioned the body language of CROSIEC and their decision to remain silent. They submitted clearly that their constituents are not allowing them any luxury based on when local government elections will be conducted.
